Kentucky Nonprofit Funds Training to Help LGBT Older Adults

According to a story in the Lexington Herald Leader, JustFundKy gave a $5,000 grant to the Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency of the Bluegrass to revise its patient bill of rights and train its staff to be more in tune with issues that gay residents encounter.

In the story, the agency’s Executive Director Sherry Culp pointed to NSCLC’s study LGBT Older Adults in Long-Term Care Facilities: Stories from the Field as proving the need for action.

Culp told the Herald Leader she was impressed by one of the stories about a gay resident of a long term care facility who “dreaded having to hide his true self out of fear of ostracism.  She noted: “These adults are losing their independence, their home, everything, and then they have to lose that [their identity] too?”
